Real Talk

I was selected by the course tutor to work as an Assistant Producer on the college TV magazine-style show, which airs monthly on YouTube. Part of the role involved generating ideas for the sofa chats and determining upcoming guests for those segments, as well as creating ideas for the video tapes (VT’s). I was responsible for writing scripts for the pre-recorded segments, setting up the stage, auditioning candidates for host roles, and preparing them for interviews. Working to tight schedules, coordinating four different topics: Intro, VT Talk, sofa guests, and Quick Talk (which featured four significant news stories from that week). The show concluded with a student performance, which included various acts from music bands to dance performances.

NHS Corporate Video

I was invited to work on a video for Peterborough City Hospital after my college work caught their attention on LinkedIn. I organised a small team to assist with filming a nature garden reserve located on the hospital grounds, designed for the benefit of patients, staff, and the local community. The cinematographer and I visited the gardens to assess the site and how best to capture the garden. Risk Assessment and indemnity documents which were issued to the client for approval.  On the shoot, I set up the interviewees with microphones and coached them before conducting the interviews, with individuals involved in creating the nature reserve.  We filmed NHS staff using the space, with tracking shots using a gimbal stabiliser, tripod and Canon DSLR cameras for close-ups of the wildlife in the reserve.  The client was delighted with the edited video, featuring graphics and logos. They were so impressed with the way my team and I had worked and with the final result, they asked us to create a Social Media video of Craig Revel Horwood unveiling a plaque for North West Anglia Hospitals Charities of which he is the patron.

Spirit Studios

Part 1

I approached Matt Campion, co-founder of Spirit Studios, requesting an opportunity for work experience and he offered me a runner position on a TV pilot dance show, featuring A-list judges and public contestants. After working behind the scenes for a few hours and gaining insight into the show's operations, I became the main assistant to the celebrity judges. While supporting them, I received valuable advice and insights about the industry. I assisted the floor manager with the stage program, ensuring that the talent was prepared and ready before going on stage, providing them with encouragement and guidance.

Part 2

Recently I collaborated again with Spirit Studios on a social media project for Holland & Barrett, creating four individual posts for TikTok and YouTube. Before the production day, I helped the production manager with the risk assessment and call sheet, gaining insight into how different companies handle paperwork. On the day of the shoot, I took the initiative to fetch breakfast, tea, and coffee for the crew and talent, helped clean the set, and ironed shirts in preparation for filming. The crew entrusted me with the autocue work and valued my suggestions on how the talent should exit the frame.

BBC News

West Herts College sought participants for a live interview with BBC News about politics, specifically focusing on how young people are staying informed about the 2024 election. The college tutors recognised I was comfortable engaging with others and suggested me as a candidate. The live broadcast interview lasted about four minutes and provided myself with valuable insight into the inner workings of terrestrial TV, including how interviews are conducted, and questions are formulated, as well as the filming process.

ITV News

Similarly, I participated in another interview focused on the elections, this time emphasising on how they affect young people and the implications of having numerous studios in the Watford area. This experience offered me a fresh perspective on the world of news and media.

Music Videos

Lo Lauren

I had the opportunity to work with emerging artist Lo Lauren on a day shoot in Tring and Buckland. I connected with the producer and director through a family friend, who suggested I assist on set with runner-style tasks. Eager to help, I took on the role, which involved providing food, assisting talent with costume changes, helping with staging the scene with props and ensuring everyone had what they needed throughout the day. The highlight of the shoot was a spectacular fireworks display that concluded the video.

Persia Holder

This music video project was for another rising artist, Persia. This shoot was simpler, as I primarily assisted by moving equipment around central London. The song, titled “Baggage,” explored the burdens people carry in relationships, which naturally meant there were numerous bag props to manage. Despite the straightforward nature of the task, it was an enjoyable experience and valuable for networking.

Wave Studios

Recently, I gained work experience at Wave Studios, where I engaged in various runner tasks including fetching teas and coffees, running food orders, plating meals, and setting up rooms for clients. Notably, I did get the chance to provide input on an advertisement that the company was sound designing. My suggestions were considered, which was a rewarding experience. The staff at Wave Studios were incredibly welcoming, and I appreciated the opportunity to discuss their career paths and experiences in the industry. This included Oscar-winning sound designer Johnnie Burn, who shared insightful behind-the-scenes knowledge about sound design.

I recently went back to the sound studio for a runner position, for a month whilst one of the runners was away looking for other jobs, I got great experience learning from others and seeing all the different sides of sound from the pre, production and post production speaking with each sound engineer and producer properly this time to really see how they work which was an educational experience. I even got to do some voice overs and foley for the studio which I really enjoyed it was so much fun doing different foley sounds and creating small voices for adverts. I did a small part in a Disney advert for Disney cruses where I did a voice over for a little girl saying, “look over their”. I even did an amazon advert where I did foley for a girl running in a dress, her breathing, her taking a bit of fabric of her head and a final loud sigh. The amazon advert was my favorite to do as the sound engineer Tony was very complementary of me and my skills even saying how good I was at the timings compared to the video and my way of creating the right sounds for him in only a few takes.
